Are you aware that legislation in Victoria is changing?  We thought it may be helpful to give you a quick recap, so read on to ensure you'll comply with the update.

The act in question: The Environment Protection Act 2017.

The amended Act comes into effect on the 1st of July 2021.  It applies to all Victorians who conduct activities that pose a risk to human health and the environment, and stipulates they must understand those risks and take reasonably practical steps to eliminate or minimise them.

The GED (General Environmental Duty) is criminally enforceable.

At Gecko Cleantech, we have over 20 years of experience in helping businesses select the right products and equipment to comply with legislation.  Some recommended products are shown below.

If you have any questions about what your business needs specifically, you can contact us via phone, 1800 432 567 or email, sales@gecko.com.au.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

The amended legislation comes into effect from 01/07/2021.
The EPA (Environment Protection Authority) will have more powers and tools to prevent risks to the environment and human health, including enforcing the law to ensure compliance.
The GED (General Environmental Duty) requires all Victorians to manage risks to human health and the environment.
For businesses this can include correctly managing waste or storing chemicals correctly.
For individuals this can include correctly managing waste or keeping household chemicals out of stormwater drains.
Common risks to manage include:

  • business activities that produce noise, odour or runoff to stormwater
  • the storage, use and disposal of liquids and chemicals
  • management of waste and the choice of transporter or receiver of wastes.

The EPA will support businesses to meet their obligations and help those in high-risk industries maintain their environmental performance.

Drain Pollution Guards

This product helps to prevent hydrocarbons and sediments from going down the drain.  Manufactured from a heavy duty geotextile filter material, the drain pollution guard will stop silt but has a low resistance to water flow, critical for efficient drainage.  Also included is a floating polypropylene bilge sock, which helps remove any hydrocarbons present in the water.  Simple to install and replace, and can be cut down to fit any drain under 1200mm square.

Polyurethane Drain Covers

Available in a variety of sizes to protect all your drains from spilled substances, this product is simple and easy to use: unroll and place over the drain.  It forms to surface contours ensuring the drain is properly sealed.  Compatible with oils, fuels, solvents and most chemicals.  Clean with warm soapy water.

Wheelie Bin Spill Kits

Available in multiple grades for different situations, our wheelie bin spill kits can be rapidly moved to the location of a spill.  120 ltr kits for lower risk areas, and 240 ltr kits for higher risk areas or where larger volumes of liquid are stored.

Spill Bunds

Gecko Cleantech offers one of the largest range of bunding in Australia.  Choosing the correct containment option is often the first step in ensuring compliance when storing chemicals and other liquids that pose a threat to human health and the environment.  A bund must have sufficient capacity to contain 110% of the volume of the largest container, or 25% of the total stored on the bund, whichever is greater.
